Our Story
On August 4, 1955, 20 Celanese employees met with a representative from the North Carolina Credit Union League. That meeting produced an organization named after two neighboring roads, Sharon Road and Fairview Road, thus Sharonview Federal Credit Union. Sharonview began operations with about $11,000 in assets. In 1957, business had increased to the point that our first paid employee was hired.
During the sixties and seventies, branches were added throughout North Carolina and South Carolina. In 1979, Sharonview's assets passed the $25 million mark.
During the 1980s, credit unions became deregulated, allowing Sharonview to begin offering more new services for example, IRAs, checking accounts, credit cards and ATMs. In 1989, Sharonview was chosen as Federal Credit Union of the year by the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU). That same year, our President/General Manager was selected by NAFCU as Professional of the Year. This was the first time in NAFCU history that the same credit union won both awards in the same year!
In the 1990s, Sharonview continued its rapid growth with the introduction of Magic One (Sharonview's 24 hour audio response system), and a telephone Financial Solutions Center. We also implemented a Payment Shaver Auto Loan program, fixed rate mortgages and bi-weekly mortgages. In 1993, Sharonview acquired offices in New Jersey, and membership topped 34,000 and assets reached $215 million.
In recent years, we've added a greater array of product and service options, expanded branch access, free online services, nationwide no surcharge ATM access and more to serve the growing financial needs of our diverse membership.
Today, Sharonview is a full-service, not-for-profit financial institution proudly serving more than 55,000 members all over the world, and assets of $800 million. From humble beginnings, we’ve grown strong. With that strength, we’ve maintained the foundation of what has made us special throughout the years.
